What it is
NaturalReader converts written text into spoken audio using AI voices that adjust tone based on content context. The proprietary text-to-speech engine reads documents, web pages, and PDFs aloud with voices that shift delivery style — formal for academic papers, conversational for blog posts. Early reviewers describe the context-aware voice behavior as noticeably different from flat robotic reading. Students, content creators, and educators make up the core audience across 3.5 million monthly visits.
At a glance
NaturalReader offers specialized AI voices that automatically adjust tone based on context, which goes beyond basic text-to-speech. The tool provides workflow automation for converting documents to audio files and integrates across multiple platforms including mobile apps and browser extensions, though it doesn't have revolutionary UX innovations or proprietary data sources.

“I have been using Natural Reader for the last year and a half or so, and I am so frustrated that it is the "best" out there. I am currently trying to get them to fix an essential feature and they couldn't care less (expanded in point #2). I am at the end of my rope and so frustrated and don't know what else to do. If someone has any suggestions on how I can escalate this, I would very much appreciate it! Some of my biggest gripes: The annotations are so frustrating if you actually need to export”
“genuinely why: I have used natural reader for years. actual years. today i went on to listen to my book while i cleaned and found that my favorite voice in the mobile version is gone? and when i went to the website version there is only one voice? i used aaron on mobile and voice 4 on the website because those were the two i could understand the most and now they are gone? and left with two voices in app and one on website? how stupid! i loved natural reader for years but now it looks like ill h”
“It is a very solid app, but struggles in areas that I need consistency in. At first, it was great, the free voices do a good job and are not annoying and it reads everything I need it to read. Once I paid for it, it is terrible. By themselves the voices sound good, once they begin reading it switches voices all the time. I choose one voice, I do not change any settings, and now I have like 5 different voices changing from sentence to sentence. It has been a terrible experience.”
“There are many apps that offer that, some of them already mentioned like Speechify, other popular option is NaturalReader. However all those apps start from $100/year for that and that doesn't seem to fit into your price range. I am not aware of any other option that would provide you this at $10/lifetime like my app Speech Central. Just you need to set API keys from Azure as described in the help to get those highly realistic voices. Speaking of that, my app has some "book emulation reading" fe”
“I'm looking for a program to read textbooks of science like biochemistry and such.I have problem with the built in feature of edge text to speech, it keeps reading the figures, and I can't learn like that. I asked the various different ai's and found natural reader only to realize they tricked me! I feel so betrayed. the natural language is awesome but they let you use it for like 2 minutes and booom the only free version is this horrible mechanical voice. or pay us money! any recommendation for”
“Hello! I've been doing a lot of writing in my spare time. I've been using Natural Readers for my editing. I have dyslexia so it helps me find errors I've missed. The free voices there are very robotic/unpleasant to listen to, and while the plus ones are nice (my favorite is Christopher), you only get a few minutes a day before you have to either A. Subscribe to an very expensive plan, or B. Go back to the robot voices. I was looking into Elevenlabs and the voices there are quite nice (Funny enou”
“Awful and Expensive.: Without knowing, I was charged for months I didn't use it at all. I didn't use it because it's terrible.”
“Good TTS app: The only thing that drives me crazy is the per day limit on listening. I’d vastly prefer a second option where I can buy a years worth of listening at 500,000 per day x365 days. There are days when I want to listen more and run out of characters, and days when I don’t listen at all & they go to waste. It’s frustrating beyond belief. Other than that; they do a decent job getting rid of bugs and making a functional app.”
“Useless app: Does not worth to waste your time on this app not working just wasting your time”
“Issues with downloading mp3: Recently every single text that I try to download as mp3 fails I am paying the monthly subscription so it really sucks that I cannot use it properly.”
“Paid but it’s doesn’t work: I’ve subscribed but the app is just doesn’t react at all. Wasted 20$. This app still need some work to do”
“Great product — Overall, I am very pleased with NR. I know that in the non-commercial version, there is an option that the words come out on the bottom of the screen as they are said. I really liked that feature, and I was disappointed that when I had purchased the commercial version that that feature was no longer available. It would be nice if it could be implemented again. I am also VERY pleased with the customer service. I had an issue a while back with how the way the files' name looked whe”

“no access to paid sub. no customer support. I have paid for a subscription and suddenly am being prompted to upgrade my subscription which does not expire until February 7, 2027. I am unable to access the service and when I emailed customer service, I was directed to read the FAQ. $159 and now useless. For a mobile app this has consistently been a glitchy pain in the a$$ to use. when I started using it, NR was the only game in town. now I have options, I'm looking elsewhere.”
“Natural Reader was once an excellent and effective tool for TTS, but since its expansion, it has terrible customer service and even worse usage documentation! I'm very sorry I bought it! The older version was much more productive and user friendly! Now it's just disappointing, frustrating, time-consuming, and very expensive! For the last month, I've been trying to get their customer service team to help me correct extraneous voices appearing where they were never chosen to be. Very aggravating”

“suffers from the biggest flaw of a text to speech app. you can't adjust the order articles are read in. I use TTS to read web novels to me while I work. which means I upload a couple chapters to read to me sequentially. you can imagine my frustration when the most recent article I upload gets listed at the top. this means that my chapter order is reversed, and there's no way to change that. I do not like listening to my stories backwards.”
“WORST AI voice ever!! continually changes tone and accent with the same voice. NO consistency at all. Very difficult interface. AVOID AT ALL COSTS Only bots, the bots won't transfer you. And when you get transferred the customer service provider gaslights you. Don't bother. They ruined their platform every thing worked fine before multiple updates came to the platform Have dyslexia, which makes reading very slow, although my comprehension is probably better than that slow rate. for things that I”
